1H Miss Hazeldine and Mrs Lamb
Welcome to Class 1H
Class Teacher : Miss Chloe Hazeldine
Class TA: Mrs Sarahjane Searl
Mrs. Searl or I will be at the door every day to welcome your children in to class. If you need to speak to me urgently, please feel free to grab me at the door. Time is limited in the mornings, so if you would like to talk about something and need more time, please make an appointment to see me after school. No question is too small and it is much better to ask as soon as anything crops up rather than waiting for a problem or concern to grow! You are also able to contact me via class dojo. If you need a new login please let me know. Alternatively, you can email me on:
chloe.hazeldine@stmatthewsstcmat.org
Thank you, Miss Hazeldine

Our 'Values Star' of the week is Evelyn for being very mature and courageous when making friendship choices this week!

Home Learning spelling activities will be handed out every Monday. The home learning books will need to come back in on a Friday for testing the spellings.
- Your child will be given reading opportunities daily in school, so please make sure their book bag and their home school reading book are in school every day. The children will read in a range of contexts including whole class stories, comprehension sessions which may be based on visual texts as well as written texts, reading in small groups and reading individually. They will change their books twice a week, and we would encourage you to read at home with your child every day - little and often is the best way to learn.
World Ocean Day!
Computing Day - The children designed their own leaflet about Wembury Marine Centre
Our trip to Wembury!
National Numeracy Day!
Today 1HL have really enjoyed World Book Day and everyone looked amazing! This afternoon we shared books, made book marks and designed a book front cover.

We enjoyed having a visitor come to talk to use about our learning in RE. We have been focussing on Islam.
We had fun baking delicious cakes today to see how much we already know about measuring weight!
Safer Internet Day! We learnt about how to stay safe online and the kinds of questions we should ask in order to do this. Take a look at some of the posters we have made!
Class Worship - 17.01.19
Class 1HL discussed the St Matthew’s school vision and what it meant to us. We selected some of our values to talk about in more detail. For each value, we explored what it meant to us and then we thought about Bible stories that we had been taught and how they linked to that value. Here are our thoughts:
Topic learning - Life on board the Mayflower!
16.01.2019 - During our History lesson today, we continued our learning about the Mayflower by imagining we were young Pilgrim children on board the ship and acting out in groups how it felt, what they did and what they ate whilst on their long voyage to Cape Cod.
Hook Day - Boat Building!
Hook Day! RNLI visit
In topic today we were learning about the United Kingdom. We explored the four countries through food, flags and physical and manmade features!
In English this week, we have been finding out about sea creatures and putting our information into non-chronological reports. Here are some examples of our finished work.
As part of guided reading today, the children were asked to choose a story they'd like to share with the class. They had to think about why they liked the book and why others would enjoy it. Grace chose the Rainbow Fish and shared it with the class at the end of the day.
Something Fishy!

Our animal poems!
Week Ending 21st September
It's been another busy week in 1H.
In our English we have been practising writing sentences, focusing on using a capital letter to start, finger spaces between words and a full stop to finish. Some of us have started writing ORANGE sentences, using "and" or "so" to link clauses.
We have finished by making our own class book called "Dear Aquarium". It looks GREAT.
In Maths we have been getting better at using manipulatives like beadstrings and ten frames to represent numbers up to 20. We are really getting the hang of it.
Next week we will be using an animation as a stimulus for our writing and we will be working towards writing the story ourselves.

Week Ending 14.09.18
This week has been BUSY!
On Thursday in Class Worship we talked about what makes our school "A City on a Hill". The children were AMAZING in their responses. Here are a few of the things they said
Week ending 7/9/18
No home learning this week! The children all seem to have settled in really well and we have had a busy but fun week, introducing our Under the Sea theme through various activities and a day of Love on Friday, thinking about how we can "Love our neighbour" as ourselves
All the children have read with an adult and where possible have brought 2 books home to read with you. If your child has only got one book it is because we are still restocking our coloured band books. Please bear with us.
Love Theme Day
Wednesday 5th September 2018
Our learning journey continues as we start in Year 1.

Growth Mindset in Reception
Here at St Matthew's we promote a Growth Mindset in all of our children. We encourage 'challenge' and teach them that to 'be challenged' is a positive thing that helps us to learn. We celebrate mistakes that we make and consider what we would do differently next time (i.e. what have we learnt from our mistake) and we think about the 'Power of Yet' - we may not be able to do something right now, but that does not mean we will never be able to do it - we just cannot do it 'yet!'.

Our First Term in RL
Phew! What a busy term! We have been learning to read and write, making friends, trying new foods, learning all about numbers and shapes, getting to know lots of different adults, becoming independent, making ourselves feel at home, learning about God, sharing information about ourselves and learning about our Christian values. Have a look at the pictures of us keeping busy!
National Marine Aquarium Visit
We were very lucky last week to have a visit from the mermaid from Plymouth Aquarium. Her name was Marina and she brought with her lots of wonderful friends and interesting things to see. We have been practising forming questions so the whole morning was very informative. We even got to hold a piece of coral and a real shark's jaw full of teeth!
St Matthews Day at St Matthew's!
We have been learning all about our school's name sake and thinking of ways we can let our 'lights shine'.
We have been loving our learning in maths and literacy!
Have a look at our displays!
We have had lots of fun getting to know our new friends and exploring our school in our first days at St Matthews.
